Flip In hair extensions

Okaaay, so this post is about a recent hair extension discovery of mine. I bought my hair extensions about 2 years ago and paid around £55.00 for them, including the clips. I had no idea how to wear them, cut a lot of them up into small strips, kept some long, sewed the clips tp them, etc, but nothing worked for me - my hair is way too thin to hold in the clips, plus i felt so self concious, like everyone could see the clips. I toyed with the idea of glue or sewing them in, but eventually, they ended up in a carrier bag in my wardrobe. UNTIL...... a couple of weeks ago when we were all down my boyfriends family's house for a get together, and i saw his step-sister Claire with some pretty nifty looking extensions in. She explained that she had been to a beauty roadshow, where she had seen Flip In extetions being showcased. Basically, they are extensions that go round your head on a clear elastcic band - it's hard to explain, so google it and see what i mean, because in my eyes, these things are a revelation!!! The only downside, is that they are waaay expensive £85 is the cheapest).

Anyway, the upshot of this is that Claire cleverly decided to make her on, sewing a regular hair elastic in place of the clear band (it just looks like you are wearing a hair band, or you could do the quiffy thing over the top of the band.)

So i raced home (sort of) and made my own, too! i measured 3 strips of my hair extensions and stitched them all together so they were nice and thick, and then sewed a band accross the top - and i'm not even joking i LOVE THEM!!! they don't fall out, take about 2 seconds to put in, and you can't see the join - i am officially in love!!!! i will upload some more in detail pics tomorrow!!!

Best of all, they don't damage your hair. Google it, watch thed demo video and then make your own, girls!!!

Mine were light brown with blonde streaks because that was the colour of my hair when i bought them, so i just bought a dark brown hair dye and dyed them to match my hair colour now!

  1. do you think this would work if you sewed two small loops of elastic to the wefts then threaded through fishing wire? this is how they seem to be made x

  2. Hi! yeah i have seen that this is how the proper extensions are made - i guess this would work - no harm in trying!
I just like the secure feeling of having the elastic myself, but then i've never tried with the wire. If you do it, let me know how you get on!

  3. Hello, thanks for your comment. I didn't actually end up taking detailed pictures of how i did the extensions, but i will do now, and will post it for you. Seriously, it's sooo easy to make your own and they are great to wear - i can't stand the clips, they just fall out. Save your money and just do what i did! Will get the post up for you asap (and will look for you on FB too!)

  4. Hi. I just came across your blog. I've been looking at these the last week or two. I'm trying to figure out whether to get them or the clip ins. Just wondering, have you tried to put your hair up with the flip in or is it possible to do with a flip in extension. Thanks. Geraldine

  5. hiya, thanks for your comment, i think you can put your hair up with these in, i've tried to do it in a mid pony tail and it worked fine. Though i'm not too sure about other hair styles, or how the flip in would compare with clip ins, as i've never used the clips, though i'm guessing you could do it just as easily with either type, sorry i can't be more help!

  6. Hello,

I have 3-3 sets of hair extensions with clips but I hate them they pull in my hair and show, and I have just discovered the flip in or Halo, and thought I could make one out of the extensions I have rather than buy one.

Could you email me some pics of what you did, how you made it?

I would be ever so grateful.

    Many thanks, Jenny

  7. Hi,

I am very interested in getting the flip-in extensions and I was reading up on them and came across your blog. You say you've made them yourself... would you please tell me how you did it?

I tried to convert my clip-in extenions into flip-ins once by threading some fishing wire through them but it didn't work at all. Can you please tell me how you made these?

I would be very grateful for your help.
    Thanks in advance!!

  10. I took my clip ins and sewed them together (even leaving the clips on) and put monofilament clear craft wire on them and they made perfect flip ins. So much more comfortable and I am able to wear the extensions I paid $150 for that I had to stop wearing b/c they were starting to break my hair. Now I can wear these instead while my hair gets healthy again. They are awesome, they will fall right out if you bend down and have your head upside down. That's my only complaint b/c my clip ins never felt loose. I love these. Much better to make them then to buy the name brand for $200.

  11. Hi, I am trying to make a decision on the Flip In Extensions. I have worn clip in extensions for almost 4 years, and I am just tired of them. Taking them out at night and putting them back in at 6am.. or just not taking them out for a few days. I am trying to grow my hair as well. I came across Halo, they are a tad out of my price range at the moment. But is the Flip In worth it for long time use? And do they ever slip out?
    Thank you :)
